    Course Description:

    In the first semester of English I, students will read and understand a variety of texts, including short stories, poetry essays, and a novel. Students will compose a variety of written texts applying the conventions of the English language.  Students will demonstrate understanding through self checks, quizzes, written assignments, and unit tests.

    Course Description:

    The second semester of English I provides instruction for students in literary concepts. In addition, students complete units of study over academic integrity, elements of language, a short novel, a document-based synthesis paper in MLA format, and a play. Students will demonstrate understanding through self checks, quizzes, written reflections, vocabulary and language study, projects, major writing assignments, and unit tests.

    The intent of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to practice critical reading and writing skills.

    In English I, students will examine the elements of academic honesty.
    Students will learn the elements of a novel and learn to determine important themes and examine character development and choices. Students will also understand the different elements of MLA format and writing, and a portion of the course consists of their creating a document-based essay from this knowledge. Students will then study the rudiments of Shakespearean drama.

    Course Description:

    In the first semester of English II, students will explore life’s ironies, journeys, and challenges through short stories, poems, and memoirs. Students will read, analyze, and evaluate short stories, poems, and memoirs. To synthesize their learning, students will write a short story analysis, a poem, and a memoir. 

    Students will demonstrate their understanding of these concepts through self-checks, research, formal and informal writings, presentations, unit evaluations, and online discussions.

    Course Description:

    In the second semester of English II, students will explore the power of persuasion, enlightenment, and manipulation through the study of the written and spoken word. Students will read, analyze, and evaluate speeches that changed the course of history.  Then, students will craft a speech utilizing research, persuasion, and integrating rhetorical devices studied in the previous unit. In Unit 3, students will read George Orwell’s allegorical novel Animal Farm in order to understand how an author uses language to enlighten readers regarding political and social issues.  

    Students will demonstrate their understanding of these concepts through self-checks, research, formal and informal writings, presentations, unit evaluations, and online discussions.

    Course Description:

    The first semester of English 3 offers students a wide sampling of American voices from major time periods in America’s history. Through reading historical documents, letters, journals, speeches, poetry, songs, short fiction, drama, novels, and expository pieces, students will explore three units: Voices of War, Voices of Purpose, and American Voices. In each unit, students will be provided opportunities to demonstrate skills related to research, writing for various purposes and audiences, critical thinking, critical reading strategies, responding to literature, the writing process, and revising and editing.

    The novel options for this course, A Lesson before Dying or Monster, will enrich your understanding of the unheard voices of America that are often overlooked.

    Course Description:

    The second semester of English 3 offers students a chance to explore common themes in American literature that have helped shape our thinking today. Students will read a novel as well as poetry and expository pieces. In each unit, students will be provided opportunities to demonstrate skills related to research, writing for various purposes and audiences, critical thinking, critical reading strategies, and responding to literature. In the final unit, students will research a topic addressed in their reading and create a proposal to solve a problem related to that topic and research. In this unit, students will apply the steps of the writing process as well as make a presentation of their findings.

    English 4, semester 1 consists of an orientation and four instructional units:

    • Beowulf: Exploring Motivation through Heroism
    • The Canterbury Tales: Exploring Motivation through Satire
    • Shakespeare: Exploring Motivation through Tragedy or Comedy
    • Exploring Your Motivation

    English 4, Semester 1 consists of three units that explore human motivation throughout several centuries of representational British literature, culminating in a fourth unit that invites students to explore their own motivation. The pieces in this course range from the earliest known works in the English language to 20th-century poetry and prose.  As students engage with the required literature, they will contemplate this question: What motivates humanity?  

    Interaction with these works of literature will enable the student to understand the development of the English language and literature, to appreciate the unique perspective of an author, to make connections among universal themes presented in works of fiction as revealed by the underlying motivations and behaviors of the characters, and to communicate effectively in various forms of writing.

    English 4, semester 2 consists of an orientation and three instructional units:

    • Exploring the Shortcomings of Humanity through Dystopian Literature
    • Exploring the Shortcomings of Humanity through Poetry
    • Exploring the Shortcomings of Humanity through Research and Reimagination

    English 4, Semester 2 consists of two units that explore the way that art deals with the shortcomings of humanity, culminating in a third unit that invites students to research an area where they see humanity falling short and discuss how we can do better. 

    Interaction with these works of literature will enable the student to understand the development of the English language and literature, to appreciate the unique perspective of an author, to make connections among universal themes presented in works of literature. In addition, students will continue to practice the skills that will help them communicate effectively in various forms of writing.
