    Full-year course

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, which is a full year elective to prepare all students for college readiness and success in a global society. It begins in 7th grade and continues through 12th grade from Renner to Plano West. The students learn study and organizational skills, strengthen their writing skills, build leadership potential, work collaboratively in multiple classes/skills, and explore college and career options. The heartbeat of the program is the tutorial support. Plano hires and trains college students and college graduates to assist students with rigorous courses. Tutorials are twice a week during AVID class. Students are encouraged to take at least 1 honors course, participate in extracurricular activities, community service, and maintain an organized binder/spiral system and agenda/planner either electronic or on paper. Students are also expected to allow time each night for reviewing notes and completing homework and projects.
