Hello, my name is Janie Gilkison.  Welcome to my web page.  I was raised in Manhattan, Kansas...Go Wildcats!  I moved to Texas in 1983 after living and working in Omaha, Nebraska for 8 years.  I love to read, swim, play with my three dachshunds and spend time having fun with my family.  Before I started teaching at Shepton my nursing career included patient care, program development and administration, developing patient, staff and community education programs and Emergency Department crisis intervention.  I graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelors degree in Life Science, Creighton University with a Bachelors degree in Nursing and University of Nebraska Medical Center with a Masters' degree in Psych/Mental Health Nursing. My credentials include holding a Texas license as an Advanced Practice  Registered Nurse, certification as a Health Science Technology teacher and certification as an American Heart Association CPR/First Aid instructor and Stop the Bleed instructor.

The courses I teach are Principles of Health Science, Medical Terminology and Health Science Theory.  These courses are electives for students who may wish to have a career in a health care profession and are part of the Career and Technology program at Shepton.  I have been teaching these courses at Shepton High School since 1995 and have loved every minute of it.  I am blessed to have enthusiastic, engaged and excited students.  Along with my teaching responsibilities, I am the Department Chair for Career and Technology and sponsor the student organization HOSA: Future Health Professionals.  

Course Descriptions: 

* Principles of Health Science exposes students to basic information about the health care industry, including information about various careers, teamwork, communication skills and legal and ethical responsibilities. It is a semester course that counts as a full year credit. (grades 9-10).

* Medical Terminology introduces students to the structure of words and medical terms.  Breaking down the medical language into word parts allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary regarding medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology. (grades 9-10, a semester course that gives full elective credit) 

* Health Science Theory provides students with information regarding human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, patient care skills, medical career exploration, the health care delivery system and communication skills.  It also offers the opportunity to become certified in American Heart Association CPR/AED/First Aid.  It satisfies the health graduation requirement. (grade 10, full year course)
