Miss Angelica-Jasmine Bates
Hello, everyone! I'm so excited to teach American Sign Language (ASL) 1 and 2 at Jasper High School.
I am a graduate of Collin College with a focus on interpreter education and Deaf studies. I then pursued a university career at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and earned a bachelor's degree in public relations and strategic communications with a minor in arts entrepreneurship. Throughout my higher education, I was a viable resource for ASL students and worked alongside Deaf teachers and professors to promote understanding and love for the language.
I have a background of 10+ years in ASL and Deaf studies through intense training, internships, and educational advancement. I am a positive leader with the exceptional ability to encourage students and bridge communities.
Please note, ASL is NOT English. Like any other language, ASL has its own rules, grammar, and syntax. This course will have an integration of expressive and receptive skills with emphasis on fingerspelling, numbers, glossing, signs, phrases, and more! I aim to provide students with information on general signs and grammatical understanding to feel confident in their skills and build relationships with the Deaf community.
