2025-2026 Transportation Plan
Student Eligibility
Plano ISD will provide transportation to any eligible student for whom it receives state transportation funds.
In accordance with law, an eligible student must:
- Legally reside two or more miles from his or her assigned campus of regular attendance as measured along the shortest route that may be traveled on public roads;
- Legally reside in a designated hazardous area within two miles of his or her assigned campus of regular attendance; or
- Be a homeless child or youth as entitled by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Improvement Act.
The district’s administrative staff will determine transportation routes using a roadway’s official designation or classification (e.g., U.S. Highway 75) for the purposes of this regulation and may change, add or eliminate routes during the school year as necessary due to road or highway construction or other such factors that may affect the district’s ability to provide transportation under this regulation.
A student who, at his or her request, attends a school other than the school to which that student would otherwise be assigned, is not an eligible student for the purposes of this regulation.
This regulation does not affect the district’s obligation to provide transportation as may be required by the individualized education program (IEP) of a student with disabilities.
Hazardous Roadways Transportation Guidelines
Plano ISD Transportation follows TEA-recommended and board-approved guidelines, Policies CNA(Legal) and CNA(Local), to determine hazardous roadways. Students who live within two miles of a campus and reside in a designated hazardous area or roadway are eligible for hazardous bus transportation.
Hazardous roadways in Plano ISD are defined as follows:
- Four- or six-lane roadway with a speed limit over 45 mph
- Four- or six-lane roadway that does not have pedestrian-activated traffic signals
- U.S. 75 Central Expressway
- Dallas North Tollway
- President George Bush Turnpike
- S.H. 289 / Preston Road
- Active Railroad Track
- Areas that do not have sidewalks or safe paths (a safe path does not have to be a sidewalk)
