Dear Plano ISD Parents, Staff and Community Members:

We join educators nationwide in extending our condolences to students, families and education colleagues following the tragic events in Parkland, Florida. As these events have unfolded across the nation, the ripples have been felt within our district, and we want you to know that your child’s physical and emotional safety is our top priority. We also want to take this opportunity to express thanks to those who have reached out to share thoughts and ideas on how to protect our children and staff to the greatest degree possible. Our counselors and administrators stand ready to respond to the needs of students, parents and staff. We ask that you continue to reach out to your campus leadership and staff if you have questions or concerns related to a specific campus or reach out to the district’s safety and security services department.

As parents, we understand and share the very same concerns that each of you has regarding the safety of your child while he or she is at school. We want to assure parents and families that on an ongoing basis, our campuses prepare for emergencies and are ever-vigilant in promoting a safe learning environment for our students. While there are no guarantees regarding safety, the district works hand-in-hand with agencies within our community to create a network of protection for your children and our employees. One of the most important things you can do to keep our community as safe as possible is to talk with your child about the importance of telling a trusted adult when they know about something that could threaten the safety of themselves or others—especially if a threat seems imminent. The district provides an anonymous tip line that is always available at www.pisd.edu/tipline. Every tip or report is investigated immediately by school administration with the support of local law enforcement, so appropriate actions may be taken.

At the beginning of each school year, students and staff are trained on the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) that is part of the Plano ISD Emergency Operations Plan. Every student third grade and above, and all staff members, view a 30-minute training video demonstrating the emergency actions of Lockdown, Lockout, Evacuate and Shelter. After your child viewed the training video, information on the SRP was sent home to parents. However, we felt it was important to share this information again, so you can discuss the SRP and school emergencies with your child as you deem appropriate. To maintain safety within our buildings, this video is not released to the general public at large but will be made available for viewing by parents at their child’s campus. In addition, we will be scheduling meetings in our feeder systems to talk about safety in our schools. We will send the dates, times and locations as soon as final arrangements are confirmed.

The district, with the full support of the Plano ISD Board of Trustees, is continuing to evaluate our safety and security measures for options that may enhance student and campus safety especially at our senior high schools where students travel between separate buildings throughout the school day. We fully appreciate that you are entrusting us with those whom you hold most precious, and we thank you for your continued trust in Plano ISD. As a community, we are troubled by events like what occurred in Florida. Incidents such as this provide us with the opportunity to show our children that we hold their safety paramount, so they can focus on their learning and growth.

        Sincerely,

        Sara M. Bonser, Interim Superintendent

Joseph L. Parks, Executive Director of Safety & Security

        Atentamente,

        Sara M. Bonser, Interim Superintendent

Joseph L. Parks, Executive Director of Safety & Security
