A History of Armstrong Middle School

Armstrong Middle School was established in 1976, marking a significant addition to the Plano Independent School District (PISD). Its location holds a rich historical significance, as it was built on land that was once part of Francis M. Armstrong’s timber tract. Armstrong, born in Tennessee, relocated to Texas in 1869 and settled in Collin County a year later. A man of vision and industriousness, Armstrong cultivated a cotton farm on what is now the site of the University of Texas at Dallas, laying the foundation for future educational and economic development in the region.

The Armstrong family’s contributions to the community extended into the 20th century. Francis’s son, Will Armstrong, demonstrated a commitment to education by serving on the Plano ISD board from 1919 to 1934, helping to shape the district during a period of rapid growth and change. This dedication to education made the Armstrong name a fitting tribute for the middle school.

Constructed at a cost of $2.7 million, Armstrong Middle School was designed to serve the burgeoning student population of Plano during the post-Vietnam War era, a time of growth and suburban development. The school opened its doors with state-of-the-art facilities for its time, reflecting the district’s commitment to providing high-quality education. Over the years, Armstrong became known for its vibrant community, academic excellence, and focus on fostering well-rounded students.
