Athletic Alignment Survey
Survey Available from January 12 through January 26In conjunction with the 2019 Strategic Plan, the Plano ISD Athletic Department began taking steps to evaluate the athletic program and identify needs to enhance student engagement and participation. Some of the issues identified included the need to address small teams at the 10th grade level, as well as increase player development. Additionally, Plano ISD’s unique configuration of 9-10 and 11-12 campuses, as opposed to a comprehensive 9-12 high school model, has caused scheduling challenges with other districts when competing. Recruitment of coaching staff also became difficult as a result of this uncommon structure as compared to other districts.
In an effort to strengthen student participation and engagement, it was critical to address programmatic concerns, build cohesion in our teams, and to increase school spirit and overall unity and brand in our high school feeders. Phase 1 of the implementation included the creation of JV2 teams for 10th graders at the senior high schools. In the 2020-21 school year, tenth grade football and volleyball teams moved their athletic periods to their feeder high school creating a JV2 team for those students. By doing so, there was an increase in student participation in those sports and senior high schools were able to create teams with their respective 9-10 feeder schools a year earlier. In 2021-22, JV2 teams were put in place for other sports such as basketball and baseball. Campus principals and the Athletics Department focused their efforts last school year to align athletic periods to maximize time for students and provide better opportunities for head coaches to be able to visit and work with student athletes.
At the January 10, 2023 School Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees heard a report regarding the Plano ISD Athletic Alignment to provide an update on the programmatic changes that were made beginning in the 2020-21 school year as well as the next steps the district is considering to create vertical unity and brand within feeder patterns. It is important to note that programmatic changes are limited to athletics, with no changes being made in fine arts. All uniforms are an existing budget item and would not be an added cost to the district. Any facility changes would fall within what is currently budgeted in our replacement and refurbishment schedules.
At this time, we are seeking valuable feedback from our students, parents, staff, and community to help guide us in planning in this process.
