Texas Exemplary School (2007-12); Texas Business and Education Coalition – Honor Roll 2011; Gold Performance Acknowledgements in the areas of reading, writing, math and science; winner of the U.S. Department of Education Excellence in Drug Prevention award (1994); youngest school recognized by the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools Program (1987-88); Clean Campus Award for Keep Plano Beautiful; Just for the Kids award for Reading Excellence.

Campus Programs

Our students are offered many opportunities for personal as well as academic growth. All of our students are taught the life skills of trustworthiness, respect for others, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. These life skills are recognized at citizenship assemblies every nine weeks. Our PTA offers a variety of programs throughout the school year. Program topics vary every year, but are reflective of our school’s diversity, academic and social goals. Safety patrol, Carlise Cares, Mystery Readers, Lil Pups and Brookdale Senior Living are a few of the groups and activities at Carlisle.

Parent Involvement Opportunities

Parents are a valued and integral partner in the success of our students and school. Our PTA offers a variety of opportunities for parental involvement. Parents may also choose to be involved as a member of our School-Based Improvement Committee (SBIC). For parents who are seeking an opportunity to have a more direct impact on our students, we have Our C2, a Mentor Program. that matches parents, as well as other community members, to students in kindergarten - fifth grade. Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is a program for another opportunity for direct impact on students.

Community/Business Partnerships

The following organizations have supported our efforts: City of Plano, Collin Creek Mall – My School’s Cool Rewards Program, Kroger, Target, and Washington Mutual.

History of Carlisle

The school is named for Henry Bascom Carlisle. He was born in August 1855 in Tennessee. He married Dona Norton and in 1888 they moved to Denison and a year later to Plano, where he later served on the city council. They had four children: Manley, Idalee, Julia, and Willie Glynne.

Mr. Carlisle started a grocery business located on the east end of Mechanic Street. In this store, there was always a cracker barrel open, a hoop of cheese with a cutter and a pickle barrel. He bought produce, such as watermelons, by the railroad carload and sold them right off the car. Squawking chickens were sold live and weighed on big scales. They also sold grain, hay and cotton seed.

“Chiney” Williams delivered groceries in the small wooden wagon pulled by two mules stabled behind the Carlisle house and children came by the store after school for a pickle or cookie. This was a favorite place for everyone when they came to town. By the mid 1890’s, his brother J. M. Carlisle joined him in business and the store changed the name to Plano Grocery Company.

In the 1920’s, Willie joined his father’s business also. After forty-five years of selling on credit, the unpaid bills owed him and the Depression forced him out of business. Mr. Carlisle died in 1934 at the age of 78.

From 1981 until Carlisle Elementary was completed in the fall of 1984, students attended Schimelpfenig.
