Vines High School

Achievements

Vines High School has a long-standing tradition of excellence. Our athletics teams are extremely competitive. In addition, numerous students play at the varsity level for Plano Senior High School. During the 2008-09 school year, ninth-grade volleyball girls won the district tournament, ninth-grade boys' basketball and tenth-grade girls' basketball were city champs.

Each year Vines students excel in academic, the fine and performance arts. During the past 10 years, over 200 Vines students have been named National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist in their junior year at Plano Senior High. Our strong band, choir and orchestra programs have garnered Sweepstakes and first place medals in a variety of contests each year. Last year the Vines One-Act Play won the district competition. The Vines Whiz Quiz team earned the division championship. Two art students earned Gold Seals at the State VASE competition and two were selected for the Nasher Summer Institute. Nine Vines speech students qualified for the state Texas Forensic Association competition. Four students were finalists for the Princeton University Prize in Race Relations and a former Vines student won the award.

Parent Involvement Opportunities

Parents are encouraged to be involved at Vines High School. Membership in our award winning PTSA, as well as many booster clubs, allow parents to be an integral part of the life of our school. Many volunteer opportunities are available to our parents and community members.

History of Vines

Vines rests on the former farmland of William Asa Vines (1853-1929). His home was just west of the present building. Born in Alabama and orphaned as a boy, Vines worked for two years in order to earn his passages to Texas on a wagon train. He then hired himself out as a farmhand for more than 13 years before saving enough money to buy his own land. Later on, he was a director of Plano National Bank.

Vines High opened in 1976 at a cost of $3.3 million.
