How to Select a Primary Care Physician (PCP)
One of the ways to most effectively manage your health is through a personal relationship with a Primary Care Physician (PCP). If you enroll in the Primary or Primary + medical plans, you must have a PCP on file for yourself and your covered family members before seeking medical care.
- A PCP can be family practice, general practice, internal medicine, pediatrician, or OB/GYN.
- Your PCP must refer you to see any specialists. Exception: A referral is not needed to see an OB/GYN.
- Each covered family member can have a different PCP, or the same PCP.
If you are CURRENTLY enrolled in the Primary or Primary + plan:
- Your current PCP ID # (as of May 1, 2025) is displayed in the enrollment system for your reference. For real-time PCP information, please login to Blue Access for Members to view your current PCP. If this PCP is correct, then no action is needed.
- If you need to change your PCP, please contact a BCBSTX Personal Health Guide at 1-866-355-5999 or you may make the update online through Blue Access for Members.
For NEW enrollments, you may choose a participating PCP by following the instructions below:
- Click on the Provider Search link and select the appropriate plan
- Search by doctor in the desired zip code
- Find the 10-digit PCP ID for your physician (see image below)
- Copy and paste the PCP ID into the PCP field in the online enrollment portal
- It always starts with an H
- No special characters or lower case letters
You will receive an ID card with your PCP’s name on it.
