  • English for Speakers of Other Languages

Plano is a diverse community, and that fact couldn't be more apparent than at Plano East. Our current students represent more than 50 different birth countries, and more than 40 percent of our student body report speaking a language other than English at home. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and it makes Plano East a fun and exciting place to learn.

  • What is ESOL?

Students who arrive in the United States as teenagers face many challenges. Not only are they adjusting to life in the United States and a new school system, they also have to master high school level material in a language that is new to them. Our ESOL program (English for Speakers of Other Languages) strives to meet all of our international students at their point of need. Some need foundational English classes and a lot of support. Others may need help with the vocabulary in just one or two of their core classes. We have more than 100 students who qualify for ESOL services, and we have a devoted staff committed to helping them with their academic, linguistic, and affective needs.

  • Goals of the ESOL program at Plano East

    • To enable English Language Learners to become competent in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the English language.
    • To help students acquire the essential knowledge and academic language needed in math, science, social studies, and language arts.
    • To provide international students with a comfortable environment in which they can overcome the language barrier and unlock their full academic potential.
    • To help English Language Learners navigate the Plano school system and earn the credits they need for high school graduation.
