PSAT Testing on October 4, 2023 for 9, 10, and 11 grade students

The PSAT is coming this October 4th!

All 9th and 10th grade students will take the PSAT on October 4th at their high school campus. Juniors who registered for the exam will also take the PSAT/NMSQT at their senior high campuses. This is an important test for our students because it is a pre-test for the SAT that all students will take in their junior year. By taking the PSAT in 9th and 10th grade, students can:

    • see their progress towards meeting college readiness;
    • set targets for the scores they want to earn on the SAT; and
    • get personalized recommendations for AP courses that are a good fit for them.

*Remember to bring your fully-charged Plano ISD Chromebook, charging cord, and a pencil on October 4

Since practice makes progress, we encourage students to practice before October 4 by establishing an Official SAT Practice account in Khan Academy.

Official SAT Practice by Khan Academy provides students with:

    • personalized practice plans;
    • 8 full-length practice tests and content created in partnership with College Board (who provides the PSAT and SAT);
    • thousands of practice questions, videos, lessons, hints, and test-taking tips; and
    • instant feedback on progress.

Plano ISD Board Approves Resolution to Join Accountability System Lawsuit Against the Texas Education Agency

On September 19, the Plano ISD Board of Trustees adopted a resolution to join dozens of other North Texas school districts and many others across the state in a lawsuit against the Texas Education Agency.

The litigation is in response to the lack of communication regarding the projected significant changes to the state’s A-F accountability rating system. School districts continue to wait on the finalized rules for the new standards that will impact every district and campus in the state.

Texas schools are rated with an A through F letter grade each year by the TEA. The system uses performance measures, methods and procedures based on student performance on the STAAR test, graduation rates, and College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) metrics. Those measures and methods are yet to be finalized, which is problematic and may significantly change this year’s rating despite seeing growth in student results.

Plano ISD supports increased student performance standards and accountability; however, Texas school districts are legally required to receive adequate notice of how the standards will be applied. On March 6, 2023, Plano ISD urged TEA to re-evaluate the accountability system refresh in a joint letter co-signed by 250 Texas school districts and education organizations. The district continued to raise concerns to TEA, but with no formal grievance process to follow with the state agency, the only other option was to enter into litigation. (read more)

    Getting R.E.A.L about School Attendance

September is School Attendance Awareness Month. This R.E.A.L. framework helps school communities understand the importance of showing up to school everyday on time.

Showing up matters for R.E.A.L because it is an opportunity to:

    • Build Routines
    • Increase Engagement
    • Provide Access to resources
    • Support Learning

Routines: Establishing a routine of daily attendance helps reduce stress at home and supports a habit of attendance that will help your teenager get and keep a job.

Engagement: Being in school helps students to get to know each other and school staff and builds relationships that can motivate participation in learning.

Access to Resources: Schools provide access to valuable resources such as meals, physical/mental health supports and fun enrichment activities such as sports, clubs, music, and other afterschool and summer programs.

Learning: Students who attend school regularly do better academically in middle school and are more likely to graduate from high school.

For more information about attendance-promoting tips and strategies for families, please email Sharon Bradley, Director of Family and Social Services.

    Starting the Vaping Conversation Early

Having healthy conversations with your children about substance abuse is a great preventative measure and another opportunity to talk to your student and practice healthy, open communication. Many think of substance abuse as solely involving drugs and alcohol; however, vaping has become more prevalent, especially among pre-teens and adolescents.

Families are encouraged to start discussions regarding vaping at an early age.

    1. Look for opportunities to discuss vaping with your child in a calm and reasonable way. There are many ways to start this conversation: news stories, letters from the school about vaping policies, ads, seeing someone vaping on TV or by simply driving past a vape shop.
    2. Be ready to listen rather than give a lecture and be sure to focus on health and safety.
    3. Try using open-ended questions to get the conversation going such as, “What do you think about vaping?” In these conversations, get kids’ perspectives and help them weigh the risks against the perceived benefits.
    4. When answering questions, offer honest, accurate, science-based information rather than trying to scare them. Try to have these conversations frequently, calmly and, if you can, before they experiment with vaping.

Linked below are prevention tips from Partnership to End Addiction and scenarios and scripts for children ages 2-18:

If you have further questions regarding your student, please do not hesitate to reach out to your campus counselor.

Plano ISD Student Code of Conduct Highlights and Behavior Expectations

Plano ISD’s Student Code of Conduct provides methods and options for managing students in the classroom, on school grounds and preventing and intervening in student discipline concerns. The Student Code of Conduct also outlines the jurisdiction and authority of the school district, including searches, investigations and the standards for student dress. It is designed to ensure that schools are safe and orderly. If you or your child believes that he or she has experienced or been a witness to prohibited conduct, harassment or bullying please immediately report the alleged acts to a teacher, counselor or principal

In addition, the district maintains an anonymous tip line to allow parents, students and community members to report concerns affecting our campuses. This includes threats, bullying, drug use, suspected abuse or neglect and any number of other concerns that may affect the physical safety or health of our students. You may use the following link to make a report: www.pisd.edu/tipline

Plano ISD has taken a strong stance against the use and possession of illegal substances, all tobacco products, e-cigarettes or any other electronic vaporizing device, by students and all others on school property and at school-sponsored and school-related activities. Any student in violation of this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action. According to HB 114, any student who is caught using, selling or in possession of any type of vape (e-cigarette or THC) shall be placed at the District Alternative Education Program (DAEP).

The Student Handbook is designed to align with law, board-adopted policy and the Student Code of Conduct. The Student Handbook provides a general overview but is not meant to be a complete statement of all policies, procedures or rules in any given circumstance. The Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook can be found here.

    Membership Recruitment for Scouts

As Patriotic Societies and per Texas legislation, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSA) are allowed an opportunity to speak to students during regular school hours about membership. [See Plano ISD’s Policy GKE(LOCAL).] Information may be distributed to students by these two Patriotic Societies at your child’s campus. Schools may also share information via their campus newsletters and/or go-home folders.

Cyber Safety Concern: Saturn and Other Calendar Apps

Plano ISD is reaching out to address a growing concern regarding the potential use of social calendar applications and the risks associated with sharing personal and school information online. As partners in student safety, including online safety, we want to ensure that you are well-informed about the potential dangers involved with using unauthorized applications, such as the Saturn app, which have not been approved by Plano ISD. These applications may lack the necessary safety measures to protect your child’s personal information and privacy. It has been reported that such apps might allow anyone to join the platform and access students' information.

The risks of sharing personal information include:

    • Privacy Concerns: Unauthorized apps may lack robust privacy settings, potentially enabling strangers to view your personal information, photos and posts.

    • Cyberbullying: Sharing personal information on unverified platforms can heighten the risk of cyberbullying, as your details may become accessible to individuals with malicious intentions.

    • Online Predators: Some unauthorized apps may attract individuals with harmful intentions who may attempt to establish contact with your child, posing a significant threat to their safety.

    • Digital Footprint: Information shared online, even on unauthorized apps, can leave a lasting digital footprint that could impact your child’s reputation in the future.

    • Data misuse: Unauthorized apps might collect your child's data without their knowledge, leading to unwanted advertisements, scams and even identity theft.

We encourage you to advise your child to avoid using these types of unauthorized apps that share personal and school-related information. To ensure their safety and the protection of their personal information, we recommend using only approved platforms and discussing any new apps with you before downloading them. Please speak with your child about responsible technology use and the potential risks associated with sharing personal information online. Additional resources related to online safety can be found on the Plano ISD Cybersecurity page.

We hold your child's online safety in high regard. By making informed decisions and adhering to our guidelines, your child can contribute to a safer online environment for themselves and their peers. Should they encounter an unfamiliar app or feel uncomfortable with any online situation, we encourage them to reach out to a teacher, school counselor or other trusted adult for advice.

We appreciate your support and partnership. Together, we can work to ensure your child has a secure and positive online experience.

Transportation Safety Update Pre-K, K and 1st Graders

Safety for our students is our top priority. Plano ISD Transportation is adding a layer of support to more easily identify our youngest student riders as they unload at their respective bus stops.

    • Our pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first-grade students will have a color-coded bus badge and matching Parent Bus Placard.
    • The Transportation team will partner with the elementary campuses to fulfill these guidelines.
    • Our school bus drivers will ensure that they match the child to the approved parent/guardian before releasing them.
    • Your campus will assist you with obtaining your student’s Bus Pass and Parent Placard.
    • The bus driver MUST have the bus placard to be able to release the student.

If the parent/guardian does not have the placard:

    • the bus driver will request identification and radio in for confirmation.
    • If the driver is not able to confirm the parent/guardian, the student will be returned to the student’s campus.
    • The parent/guardian will be contacted and directed to pick up their student(s) at the campus.

    Older sibling:

    • An older sibling, third-grade and up, can be responsible for and released with a pre-kindergarten, kindergarten or first-grade student.
    • A Sibling Authorization Form must be completed.
    • Upon completion of the Sibling Authorization form, an additional badge will be created for the older sibling to show to the driver daily when disembarking the bus with their younger sibling.
    • If there is no Sibling Tag or adult to receive the student, the student will be returned to the campus.

Please work with your campus regarding Bus Badges and Parent Bus Placards. They will connect with Transportation in processing the requests.
