Plano ISD Vision Statement: Committed to Excellence, Dedicated to Caring, Powered by Learning, Plano ISD Proud

An End-of-the-Year Message from the Superintendent

    Dear Plano ISD Community,

As we reach the end of another school year, I want to offer a sincere thank you to our staff, students, parents and community for the amazing year we have had. As always, you have demonstrated that you are committed to excellence, dedicated to caring and powered by learning, which makes me “Plano ISD proud” to have the honor of leading this district. This year has been filled with countless accomplishments and successes, and I am proud of all that we have achieved together.

I am also proud to say that our community continues to invest in our kids and our district. In November, you voted to pass three propositions in the Bond and VATRE election, which is providing critical funding for staff compensation, facility improvements, safety enhancements, technology upgrades and other important initiatives. This is a testament to the commitment we all share to provide the very best education for our students.

This year, our community stepped up when we sought input regarding vertical alignment between feeder high schools and senior high schools. We appreciate your valuable input on this student engagement initiative. We were also able to listen to and include many voices in our strategic roadmap process, which served as a blueprint for our newly adopted strategic plan.

Looking ahead to 2023-24 and beyond, we will lead as a district of excellence by honoring our history, living our legacy and innovating for the future. We are committed to continuing to provide our students with a world-class education that prepares them for success in college, career and life. We know that, together, we can level up and achieve even greater heights. I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and the opportunities that we have to continue helping ourselves and our students grow and improve.

As we head into summer, I hope that everyone will have a chance to recharge and renew. Whether you are planning a vacation, spending time with family and friends, or simply taking some time for yourself, I hope that each of you has the opportunity to make the most of a well-deserved break.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your dedication, support and partnership this year. It is because of your commitment to excellence—and to our students—that we are able to continue to provide an outstanding education in Plano ISD. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Theresa Williams
    Superintendent

    Plano ISD Safety Update

    May 8, 2023

    Dear Plano ISD Families,

The safety of our students and staff is of the highest priority in Plano ISD. We are sending this update in response to the number of calls to campuses from parents and families expressing concern and to reassure you that we continue to address social media rumors of alleged threats being made. Some of the social media posts have referenced Plano ISD campuses and have been investigated; none have been found to be credible.

Safety concerns are at a heightened level in our community in light of recent incidents. While no credible threat has been identified, our administrators and safety and security personnel are working closely with local law enforcement as needed to address any and all threats.  Due to these elevated concerns, student absences will be excused today with a parent/guardian note.

Any threat is a serious matter, and district policy prohibits threats of any type. All direct, perceived or implied threats to any Plano ISD campus, student or staff member, even as a prank, will be investigated by school and district personnel, as well as law enforcement, and will result in school and/or criminal consequences depending on the severity of the incident, which may include criminal charges minimally including a Class-A misdemeanor, a fine of up to $4,000 and up to one year in jail. Charges can also be as severe as a third-degree felony, punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 and 2 to 10 years in jail. Consequences also include In- or Out-of-School Suspension, District Alternative Education Placement, and Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Placement.

Please see this video resource, which addresses the seriousness of issuing threats, regardless of intent, and how our local law enforcement agencies support us in these matters.

We encourage all students, parents and staff to feel comfortable sharing any concern with a trusted adult or via the anonymous tip line at www.pisd.edu/tipline. This is an important reminder that we all play a critical role in school safety and if we see something, we should say something.

We appreciate your continued support and cooperation as we strive to keep our students safe.

    Plano ISD Safety Update

    May 7, 2023

This message is being shared to make Plano ISD families aware of a social media rumor reported today via the district’s anonymous tip line. The social media post implied a general threat without naming a specific school or district. Plano ISD takes all threats seriously, and our district safety and security personnel have notified the Plano Police Department regarding this rumor. While no credible threat has been identified, Plano ISD follows all district policies and practices to safeguard our students and schools and has a number of safety features and practices in place on each campus to help prevent and mitigate incidents.

As we continue our vigilance in the area of safety, we ask parents to please talk to your children about the seriousness of issuing any kind of threat, regardless of intent, via social media, text messages, email or in person. Such perceived or implied threats to a Plano ISD school, student or staff member, even as a prank, will be investigated by the school and law enforcement, and may result in school and/or criminal consequences depending on the severity of the incident.

After this weekend’s incident at the Allen Premium Outlets, we understand that safety concerns are high in our community, especially when it comes to our students. We all play an important role in school safety, and students and families are always encouraged to report any concerns to a trusted adult or use the tip line at www.pisd.edu/tipline. In the case of an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Plano ISD Joins Statewide Effort Urging Lawmakers to Address Inflation Impacts on School Funding

On May 1, Plano ISD joined forces with other school districts across the state to urge parents and supporters to contact state lawmakers about school funding. With only one month left in the legislative session, now is the time for our voices to be heard before the session ends on May 29.

Speaking at a joint press conference, School Board Vice President Nancy Humphrey stated, “For Plano ISD, this is an S.O.S moment—SUPPORT OUR SCHOOLS. Despite being one of the largest and wealthiest states in the country, Texas consistently ranks near the bottom in per-pupil spending on education….School districts need additional funding to be made whole from the impact of inflation over the last four years and going forward.”

plano isd board vice president nancy humphrey speaking at podium

Also representing Plano and the business community in this effort was City of Plano Economic Development Director Doug McDonald whose mom was a teacher for 25 years before retiring. He stated, “The number one asset that recruits global companies to the state of Texas is our schools. The number one challenge facing our companies is workforce. It’s not a simple fix. We have to continue building a pipeline of talent and that starts with our schools. Our future workforce is in our schools today.” (VIDEO: See full remarks by Ms. Humphrey and Mr. McDonald.)

plano economic development director doug mcdonald speaking at podium

In addition to the event in Dallas, similar events occurred in Fort Worth, Austin, El Paso, Midland-Odessa and Tyler.

It is important to note that school districts do not receive more funding when property values increase. We are allotted a certain amount of money per student regardless of our property values, and the amount allotted per student has not changed since 2019. Since then, we have all felt the impact of inflation on our household budgets, and school districts are no different.

Additionally, in Plano ISD, recapture payments to the state have increased by more than 50% since 2019. This means that more of our local tax dollars are being sent to the state, leaving less money to support our schools.

We are asking our legislators in Austin to provide school districts with additional funding to at least make up for inflation since 2019. To just keep up with inflation, our basic allotment must increase by nearly $1,000 across the board.

    S.O.S.: Support Our schools, www.pisd.edu/supportourschools

We encourage you to take action and urge lawmakers to support our schools by visiting www.pisd.edu/SupportOurSchools. It only takes 15 seconds to send a respectful message seeking more funding for Texas public schools. This link will remain active through the end of the legislative session on May 29.

Plano ISD Is Monitoring for Potential Severe Weather

With severe weather predicted once again this week for our area, we are reaching out to provide a reminder of Plano ISD’s inclement weather procedures. Thunderstorms appear to be likely this afternoon and into the evening with strong to severe storms currently being predicted between 2:00 PM and 9:00 PM. These storms have the potential to produce large hail and damaging winds and could coincide with dismissal across the district.

We will continue to closely monitor weather conditions throughout the day and will communicate with families and staff if school operations need to change.

Unless otherwise announced, schools will observe their regular dismissal time. Buses and dismissal times could be delayed depending on the location and severity of afternoon storms. In the event of severe weather and/or a tornado warning that occurs during dismissal time, students will not be released from the campus and will move to designated safety locations inside the building.

Please continue to monitor the school district communications channels for any updates or new information regarding the weather and school operations:

    • The Plano ISD website: Weather-related cancellations and updates will be posted in real time on the Plano ISD home page as well as campus websites.
    • The Plano ISD Mobile App: Download the mobile app and log in to receive specific messages related to your school. However, weather cancellations will be sent to all app users, even if you are not logged in to the system.
    • School Messenger (e-mail, SMS and telephone messages): In the event that there is a change to school operations, the district will provide updated information as needed to all parent and emergency contact telephone numbers and email addresses in the system.
    • Social media – Facebook, Instagram and Twitter: Weather-related cancellations will be posted immediately to Plano ISD’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages. You do not have to sign up for Facebook or Twitter to view these pages; however, followers will receive instant updates in their newsfeeds.

Thank you for your understanding and dedication to keeping students safe.

  • April 2, 2023 - Important Safety Reminder for Plano ISD Families

    April 2, 2023

Plano ISD Vision Statement: Committed to Excellence, Dedicated to Caring, Powered by Learning, Plano ISD Proud

Important Safety Reminder for Plano ISD Families

In Plano ISD, the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff are always a top priority. Going into a new school week, we want to address an increase we are experiencing in students making false threats in conversations and on social media that are causing unnecessary disruption.

As partners in your children’s education, we are asking for your help in building awareness regarding these safety concerns. Please talk to your children and help them understand that even false or hoax threats can cause immense fear and panic, which can negatively impact our entire school community. Additionally, as some students may have toys that look like or appear as real weapons (e.g., Nerf guns, BB guns, air guns, etc.), we ask for your help in preventing these toys from becoming a perceived threat either in person or sent via social media, text message or email.

All threats, whether perceived, false or implied, will be fully investigated by school officials and appropriate law enforcement agencies, and may result in school and/or criminal consequences depending on the severity of the incident. Plano ISD will follow all laws and enforce relevant consequences for anyone found making threats, regardless of intention.

Please see this video resource, which addresses the seriousness of issuing threats, including false threats or pranks, and how our local law enforcement agencies support us in these matters.

    >> Watch Video

In order for every student to receive an exceptional education in a safe and supportive learning environment, we must work together to keep our classrooms safe from anyone who may attempt to cause fear, disruption or alarm. We want to reassure our families that Plano ISD and local law enforcement agencies take all threats very seriously.

As a reminder, possession of prohibited items and misuse of technology resources and the Internet violate the Plano ISD Student Code of Conduct and are subject to serious disciplinary action, which may include:

    • In- or Out-of-School Suspension
    • District Alternative Education Placement
    • Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Placement
    • Criminal Charges

Parents are asked to take the following steps to support the safety and wellness of our students and schools:

    • Please monitor your child’s online and social media behavior
    • Engage in open dialogue with your children about the consequences of irresponsible behavior, making threats or jokes about violence, and the importance of safety and respect for others
    • Encourage your child to say something if they see something and to always make responsible decisions

Plano ISD has several resources available to help support our students, whether from the district or community agencies. Students can reach out to their school counselors, campus principals or other trusted staff members at any time. Visit the Counseling and Student Management web pages for more information regarding safety concerns. Additionally, Plano ISD will continue to provide student guidance and build awareness around student safety.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain an atmosphere in which all students can learn and thrive.

    Plano ISD Legislative Update

As the 88th Texas Legislative Session continues, Plano ISD is providing an update on the district’s legislative advocacy efforts. School Board Trustees, Superintendent Williams and district leaders have been closely monitoring bills that impact our students and schools, and continue to advocate on behalf of Plano ISD and public education. As always, we remain committed to ensuring that every child in our district has access to a high-quality education that prepares them for success in life.

One issue that we are closely following this session is the proposed use of public funds for private education through taxpayer savings accounts, education savings accounts, tax credit scholarships, vouchers, etc. We strongly believe that public education funding should remain dedicated to our public schools, which serve all students. Private or home schools that accept vouchers are not held to the same accountability standards as public schools.

Another priority topic is the Texas Education Agency’s proposed changes to the A-F accountability system. The TEA proposes to raise the cut score necessary for a district to receive an “A” in the CCMR domain from 60 points to 88 points, a nearly 47% increase in one year. This is a significant change and will have drastic impacts to overall school and district ratings across Texas.

Plano ISD has shared position letters on these topics with state leaders and will continue to advocate on these issues. One such advocacy effort as it relates to the accountability system is reminding our community and those who represent us that our students, staff and schools are #MoreThanAScore. We are sharing this campaign across our social media platforms, and you can view the video showcase on Vimeo

Keep up with the district’s legislative priorities and activities by signing up to receive our Legislative Affairs Newsletter

We also encourage you to learn more about the district's legislative priorities, legislative remedies and other efforts. On our website, you can view our legislative affairs newsletter and stay up-to-date with the bills we are tracking. You can also access our position letters and other resources and find contact information for your legislators if you would like to reach out to them regarding priorities that are important for Texas public schools.

  • March 15, 2023 - Message from Superintendent Williams

    Dear Plano ISD Families,

I am reaching out to you as an educator, school district leader and most of all, as a mom, regarding a very serious concern that is putting lives at risk across our nation, our state, and right here in our own community. We recently experienced the tragic loss of one of our beloved Plano ISD students to a deadly fentanyl poisoning. I cannot express the sadness and grief that we are all feeling.

In partnership and with full permission from the parents who experienced this grave loss, we are urging you to please read through this letter and engage in a discussion with your own children about the dangers of drug use, specifically fentanyl. It is crucial that students and those of us who care for them understand the risks involved and the devastating consequences that can come from experimenting with this and other drugs, which come in various forms—from pills to vape solutions. It is important to know that fentanyl is 50-100 times stronger than morphine, and doses as small as 2 grains of salt can be potentially lethal—one pill can kill.

We understand that during difficult times like these, we must all come together as a community to prevent further tragedies from occurring. Raising awareness, being informed and having ongoing conversations with our children are critical steps that we must take now more than ever. As a school district, Plano ISD is committed to providing resources and support to our students and families. Due to rising concerns about fentanyl and other drug misuse, we have increased those efforts, including ongoing education and outreach from our health services and counseling services departments, such as:

We also want to reshare the following information from our February alert:

Important facts you need to know about fentanyl:

    • According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), 6 out of 10 pills contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl.
    • You can’t smell or taste fentanyl, and you cannot tell if a pill is fake just by looking at it.
    • Do not take any pill that you do not directly get from a doctor or pharmacist.
    • Pills purchased online or from social media are not safe — no matter what someone tells you.
    • Fake pills laced with fentanyl can be disguised as candy in order to lure younger kids.
    • If you or someone around you takes an illegal pill, know how to recognize a fentanyl (or other opioid) overdose.

Signs of an overdose (source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention):

    • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
    • Falling asleep or losing consciousness
    • Slow, weak or no breathing
    • Choking or gurgling sounds
    • Limp body
    • Cold and/or clammy skin
    • Discolored skin (especially in lips and nails)

    What parents can do:

    • Call 911 immediately if you think someone is overdosing.
    • Talk to your kids about the risks of drugs early and frequently and provide guidance and clear expectations about not using drugs.
    • Because “one pill can kill” , help your kids know how to say “No” to drugs. Role play so that they are prepared to say no if they are ever pressured by others to try drugs.
    • Have access to Naloxone in case of an overdose. See information from the National Institute on Drug Abuse website.
    • Stay informed by visiting our Plano ISD Substance Abuse web page.

If you or your child is in need of assistance, please reach out to your school counselors. You can reach them directly via phone or email.

We are asking for your support in educating our children on the dangers of fentanyl and other drugs. Through open communication and a unified effort, we can work toward a safer and healthier community.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Theresa Williams
    Superintendent

  • February 2, 2023 - Inclement Weather Closure Extended through Friday, Feb 3

Plano ISD Weather Closure Extended to Include Friday, February 3

Due to hazardous travel conditions that will continue through Friday morning’s commute, and keeping the safety of our students and staff a priority, all Plano ISD schools and facilities will remain closed through Friday, February 3.

Although weather conditions improved somewhat today, the continued precipitation and tonight’s expected freezing temperatures remain a safety concern for many of our less traveled roads and bridges, student drivers and students who walk to school.

The forecasted below freezing temperatures overnight and continued precipitation also pose a significant safety concern for icy district parking lots and sidewalks for the morning commute. The weather is expected to improve by midday tomorrow, but not in a time frame that would allow a safe commute to school.

The improved weather conditions over the weekend will allow Plano ISD to resume our normal schedule for schools and offices on Monday, February 6.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation throughout this challenging week.

  • February 2, 2023 - Plano ISD Is Monitoring Conditions for Friday, Feb 3

Plano ISD Is Monitoring Weather and Road Conditions for Friday, February 3

We hope all students, families and staff are staying safe and warm as the winter weather continues. Keeping the safety and well-being of our school community a top priority, Plano ISD continues to monitor weather conditions closely, working with area emergency management teams and the National Weather Service.

As we are assessing and evaluating conditions to make a decision for tomorrow, February 3, it is important to understand the many variables the district must consider:

    • Plano ISD spans approximately 100 square miles, which includes neighborhood roads and bridges that are subject to more severe driving conditions than major roads and highways.
    • Many Plano ISD teachers and staff commute to Plano and can be impacted by weather conditions that may be different from what we are experiencing at or near our schools.
    • Driving conditions for our senior high school teen drivers are taken into serious consideration.
    • Plano ISD uses a tiered bus transportation and school start schedule. This makes it difficult to call a late start as it pushes secondary start times close to 11:00 a.m. and leaves little time for instruction. Additionally, buses complete secondary drop-off and almost immediately begin preparing for elementary end-of-day transportation.

Ultimately, our main priority is the safety of students and staff. We will continue to monitor the weather and driving conditions, but it is possible that we will not be able to make a determination this evening. We will continue to evaluate conditions and make a decision by 5:00 tomorrow morning, and will notify staff and families via our regular communications channels.

  • January 13, 2023 - Athletic Alignment Survey

    Athletic Alignment Information and Survey

In conjunction with the 2019 Strategic Plan, the Plano ISD Athletic Department began taking steps to evaluate the athletic program and identify needs to enhance student engagement and participation. Some of the issues identified included the need to address small teams at the 10th grade level, as well as increase player development. Additionally, Plano ISD’s unique configuration of 9-10 and 11-12 campuses, as opposed to a comprehensive 9-12 high school model, has caused scheduling challenges with other districts when competing. Recruitment of coaching staff also became difficult as a result of this uncommon structure as compared to other districts.

In an effort to strengthen student participation and engagement, it was critical to address programmatic concerns, build cohesion in our teams, and to increase school spirit and overall unity and brand in our high school feeders. Phase 1 of the implementation included the creation of JV2 teams for 10th graders at the senior high schools. In the 2020-21 school year, tenth grade football and volleyball teams moved their athletic periods to their feeder high school creating a JV2 team for those students. By doing so, there was an increase in student participation in those sports and senior high schools were able to create teams with their respective 9-10 feeder schools a year earlier. In 2021-22, JV2 teams were put in place for other sports such as basketball and baseball. Campus principals and the Athletics Department focused their efforts last school year to align athletic periods to maximize time for students and provide better opportunities for head coaches to be able to visit and work with student athletes.

At the January 10, 2023 School Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees heard a report regarding the Plano ISD Athletic Alignment to provide an update on the programmatic changes that were made beginning in the 2020-21 school year as well as the next steps the district is considering to create vertical unity and brand within feeder patterns. It is important to note that programmatic changes are limited to athletics, with no changes being made in fine arts.  All uniforms are an existing budget item and would not be an added cost to the district. Any facility changes would fall within what is currently budgeted in our replacement and refurbishment schedules.

LEARN MORE: WATCH BOARD MEETING PRESENTATION FROM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JEFF SMITH

At this time, we are seeking valuable feedback from our students, parents, staff, and community to help guide us in planning in this process. Please consider taking this short survey to provide your thoughts about this alignment and branding change in reference to:

    • Plano Senior High Feeders (Clark HS | Vines HS)
    • Plano East Senior High Feeders (McMillen HS | Williams HS)
    • Plano West Senior High Feeders (Jasper HS | Shepton HS)

Plano ISD Board of Trustees Approves 2023-2024 Academic Calendar

The 2023-24 Plano ISD Academic Calendar was approved by the Board of Trustees during their meeting on Tuesday, December 6. The calendar features a start date of Wednesday, August 9, 2023, and an end date of Friday, May 24, 2024.

The new calendar includes 10 additional instructional minutes per day to allow for the following:

    • Banked minutes (up to three days) for any unforeseen school closures, such as inclement weather
    • An additional teacher/student holiday

    Other new calendar features include:

    • A full week fall break for students
    • A three-day fall break for campus staff (returning Thursday and Friday for staff days)
    • Professional Learning Trade Days in December and February (rather than during the week of Thanksgiving)
    • A winter break that provides more balance between the two semesters and aligns with neighboring school districts
    • Spring break during the second full week of March (March 11-15), which aligns with neighboring school districts

Many factors were considered during the calendar development period, which included establishing parameters based on new and historical input from stakeholder groups (parents, students, campus and district administrators, teachers and community members). The administration provided updates, shared multiple calendar options and sought input from the Board of Trustees during three board meetings on October 18, November 1 and November 15. The final calendar, approved December 6, aligns with the following parameters:

    • Length of the required school day/instructional minutes (75,600 minutes)
    • Two semesters with a similar number of instructional days (while considering local, state and national testing in the spring)
    • Mid-week start for first semester
    • Exam/testing calendars (district, state, PSAT, AP and IB)
    • Alignment with dual credit/Collin College
    • Alignment with neighboring school districts
    • Planning/professional learning time for teachers
    • Fall break consideration
    • Week off at Thanksgiving for students and campus staff
    • Professional learning trade days scheduled outside of Thanksgiving week
    • End first semester before winter break

  • November 9, 2022 - Message from Superintendent Williams

Watch a thank you message from Superintendent Dr. Theresa Williams

    Dear Plano ISD Families,

Last night’s preliminary election results show that Plano ISD voters approved a majority of the district's nearly $1.5 billion bond referendum. The Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE), Proposition A, was also approved and will add an additional $9 million annually to the operating budget. The passing of Bond Propositions B and C represent $1,346,426,000 of the total proposed bond package of $1,495,638,000.

I am so grateful for our community’s continued support of Plano ISD. Our residents have a long history of investing in students and ensuring that Plano ISD remains a premier district.

Proposition B will allow us to update schools and facilities, add additional safety measures, build a much needed CTE center and replace all of our playgrounds so they are ADA accessible. Proposition C will provide technology device replacements and upgrades. Our Future Forward Task Force focused on a bond program to ensure continued excellence in Plano ISD, and I thank our voters for helping us deliver on the promise of excellence that our students and staff deserve.

An overview of the election results show:
    * Election results are unofficial until canvassed.

Proposition A: 51.81 percent voting “for”
Voter Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE)
    VOTES FOR: 59,709
    VOTES AGAINST: 55,548
The net revenue generated by Plano ISD will be approximately $9 million annually.

Proposition B: 55.98 percent voting “for”
    School Renovations & Safety
    VOTES FOR: 64,911
    VOTES AGAINST: 51,037
$1,172,976,000 for a new CTE Center, a replacement school for Haggard Middle School, a major renovation at Plano Senior High School, safety and security upgrades across the district, new playgrounds and renovations at many campuses.

Proposition C: 56.00 percent voting “for”
    Instructional Technology
    VOTES FOR: 64,654
    VOTES AGAINST: 50,793
$173,450,000 for technology device replacements, classroom technology upgrades and more.

Proposition D: 48.54 percent voting “for”
    Event Center
    VOTES FOR: 55,953
    VOTES AGAINST: 59,307
$130,000,000 for a multi-use and flexible event space.

Proposition E: 44.96 percent voting “for”
    Safety & Maintenance at Stadiums
    VOTES FOR: 51,740
    VOTES AGAINST: 63,339
$19,212,000 for turf replacement, new security lighting, parking lot resurfacing and restroom updates.

I am pleased to report that we can issue these new bonds without a tax rate increase. The tax rates set by the Board this summer, which were the lowest rates in a number of years, will remain unchanged.

To view more project details, please visit our website at pisd.edu/election2022. As projects get underway, we will share regular updates with parents and community members. This will be another exciting time for our students, staff and community.

    Thank you for your support!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Theresa Williams
    Superintendent of Schools

Plano ISD Board Calls November Elections

At Tuesday night’s school board meeting, Plano ISD trustees voted unanimously to include a Voter Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) and a Bond Election on the November 8 ballot. Plano ISD voters will be asked to consider five propositions that would generate additional funding to support educational programs, staff salaries and facility renovations across the district.

A task force made up of community members from a variety of perspectives convened during the 2021-2022 school year and through the summer to evaluate and prioritize the district’s current and future needs. Known as the Future Forward Task Force, the committee included parents, grandparents, business leaders, chamber of commerce members, homeowner association members, nonprofit leaders, school administrators and teachers. Their research included evaluating input from the community through a third-party survey, as well working in committees to identify and prioritize needs. After months of study and public input, the task force made final recommendations to school trustees, which are included in this bond proposal.

back to school 2022 August 10

Plano ISD looks forward to another great school year for students, staff and families. The first day of school for students is Wednesday, August 10.

Whether you are a new or returning family, there are a number of things you should know in preparing for the new school year. This special Back to School Family Update provides information and resources to help you navigate and prepare for the new school year.

While this update features a number of topics, there is much more to be found on the Plano ISD website. Please visit the district’s Back to School Page or your school’s website. We look forward to seeing all of our students on opening day!

Later this week, the district will share the 2022-23 Back to School Plan, which provides general information about the new school year, instructional information for families, safety and security protocols and resources, as well as current health protocols.

    School Safety

In Plano ISD, our ultimate priority is to provide the highest quality education for all students in the safest possible learning environment. Throughout the summer, the district’s Safety and Security Services Department has been diligently working on reviewing and improving existing safety protocols, while considering new security measures to safeguard our students, staff and schools. This includes evaluating and revising our District Emergency Operations Plan as well as individual Campus Emergency Plans.

Later this week, the district will share the 2022-23 Back to School Plan, which addresses many proactive measures such as locking classroom doors at all times, the use of the Standard Response Protocol and our partnerships with local police departments.

Please visit the District Safety and Security section on the website at www.pisd.edu/safety for the most current and detailed information related to campus safety. We encourage our parents to partner with us by talking with your children about the importance of keeping schools safe, following all protocols and reminding them that if they see something, say something.

    Student Health and Wellness

    Protocols

Plano ISD prioritizes the health, safety and wellbeing of all students, staff and families. To that end, district leaders continually monitor district and community trends and refer to local, state and federal guidance in order to optimize student learning in a healthy and safe instructional environment. Health protocols will remain flexible to accommodate potential changes, and guidelines may be modified as needed.

    Immunization

To see a list of state required immunizations, please visit the Plano ISD website at www.pisd.edu/immunizations, and learn more about school health services at www.pisd.edu/health

    School Supplies and Tax-Free Weekend

A list of K-5 school supplies is available on the website at www.pisd.edu/schoolsupplies. Secondary school supply lists are available on individual campus websites.

As a reminder, tax-free weekend is August 5-7. Families can save money on tax-free purchases of most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) during the annual sales tax holiday.

    Registration & Enrollment

Annual registration for students who were enrolled in Plano ISD in the 2021-2022 school year can be completed online via the district’s Parent Portal. Learn more about registration and enrollment on the district website:

    Transportation

To check eligibility and bus stops for your home address, visit the district’s Route Finder tool. Please check this resource again the day before school in case updates are made to bus routes.

During the school year, keep track of when the bus is running late by visiting www.pisd.edu/busalerts. This page lets you know when buses are running more than 30 minutes late.

We value and appreciate the commitment of all volunteers and mentors who give of their time and talent to Plano ISD.

For more information about volunteering with Plano ISD, visit the district’s volunteer website page. School Calendar & Hours

PASAR, the district’s after-school care program, is operating with lower caregiver to child ratios. Consequently, this has resulted in the need to cap enrollment at PASAR sites. Visit the PASAR website page to see which sites are available and to get information on how to be added to a waitlist.

The district is continuing to hire PASAR staff in order to allow for additional student enrollment. Individuals who are interested in applying for any open positions as site managers or activity specialists can visit Plano ISD’s employment page at www.pisd.edu/jobs. Activity specialist positions are open to students in college or their senior or junior years in high school.

    Voluntary Student Accident Insurance

Plano ISD does not provide accident insurance for injuries incurred by your child at school or while participating in school-related activities. As a service to students and their families, the district offers a student accident insurance plan for parents to purchase for their child at a reasonable cost. Please note that this Policy does not provide benefits for sickness.

The 2022-23 Voluntary Student Accident Insurance coverage is available for Plano ISD parents to purchase through AXIS Insurance Company using the Enrollment Form available on the Student Insurance webpage.

Parents can access the following on the above webpage:

    • Coverage and premium options (premiums stated are a one-time annual payment)
